Oracle VirtualBox (formerly Sun VirtualBox) is a free and open source virtualization software developed and maintained by Oracle Corporation. This software is designed to allow one or more operating systems to run within a single physical machine in the form of isolated virtual machines. VirtualBox is a widely used tool among system administrators, developers, and educational institutions because it provides a simple yet powerful solution for testing and running different operating systems simultaneously without changing the underlying physical hardware.

How to install Guest additions on Debian 11 (Bullseye) running in VirtualBox

botond published March 2022, 04, Thu - 21:17 time
If you are running operating systems in VirtualBox, it is a good idea to install Guest Additions on the guest system, which will provide a greater degree of compatibility with the virtual hardware so that the guest system can make better use of the available hardware resources. In this description, we will install the Guest Additions package on a system with a Debian 6.1 (Bullseye) KDE desktop environment running in VirtualBox 11.

How to configure VirtualBox for graphical desktop operating systems

Thanks to virtualization, we have the ability to run another operating system within our computer’s existing operating system. This can be used for a variety of purposes, in this case I will use the free VirtualBox virtualization program for the installation, in which I will install the guest operating systems that are the subject of the tutorials. In this description, in VirtualBox running on a Linux host, I create a guest machine for Linux or Windows operating systems with a graphical desktop environment that requires more hardware resources - and therefore different settings in some places - than the previous version for Linux base systems.

What to do if your VirtualBox does not start the installation ISO image files in EFI mode

If you frequently use virtual machines with VirtualBox, it is a more convenient and time-saving solution if you do not create and configure a new virtual machine for each installation, but use the existing ones. In some cases, this can cause problems, such as when you try to start your installer in EFI mode, but it does not want to start. In this short little troubleshooter, we will look at how to start ISO installers on EFI mode virtual machines.

How to shrink image files of our VirtualBox virtual machines on Linux and Windows systems

botond published Jan. 2020, 12, 02:20 p.m. time
VirtualBox allows you to run virtual machines on your computer that share the computer's hardware resources with the host operating system. VirtualBox also provides the ability to use dynamically growing storage, which allows you to create drives that are (virtually) the same fixed size inside, but the physical image files themselves are only a few megabytes in size when created and grow depending on the amount of data loaded. This is unfortunately not true backwards, so if you delete something from the virtual machine, for example, the size of the physical image file on the virtual storage device will unfortunately not be reduced. In this description, we will look at how to manually shrink the dynamically growing image files of our VirtualBox virtual machines to the size actually used on Linux and Windows systems.
