WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is an extension of the HTTP protocol that allows clients to perform remote web content editing operations on the server. The WebDAV protocol provides a framework for users to create, modify, and move documents on servers. Key features of the protocol include authors or modification dates, namespace management, maintenance of collections, and overwrite protection properties.
Property maintenance includes things like creating, removing, and querying file information.
Namespace management also allows you to copy and move web pages within the server namespace.
Collections are about creating, removing, and listing different sources.
Overwrite protection handles things related to closing files.

WebDAV adds the following actions to the HTTP protocol:

  • COPY: Copy resources from one place to another
  • LOCK: Lock resource
  • MKCOL: Create a collection (practically a library)
  • MOVE: Move resource to another location
  • PROFFIND: Query resource properties in XML (name-value pairs)
  • PROPATCH: Change or delete resource properties
  • UNLOCK: Unlocking a resource

Most operating systems have built-in client-side support for WebDAW. The following servers have server-side WebDAV support:

  • Apache HTTP server
  • Microsoft IIS
  • Nginx web server
  • lighttpd

WebDAV is Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is defined by RFC 4918-in.
